But you have to ask yourself if the topics would be appropriate in a poem or maybe a novel. So what would be an essay topic for Beowulf? It could be a typical English classroom assignment, like 'we.' A real student would recognize that in this scenario the term 'we' were going to be used in place of the pronoun 'I' and thus would know the two independent clauses, 'we'we do not have to be the subject of the sentence.' Animals Deserve Rights Essay - 802 Words

Animals Deserve Rights It is the notion of our time that non-human animals exist for the advancement of the human species. In whatever field -- cookery, fashion, blood-sports -- it is held that we can only be concerned with animals as far as human interests exist. There may be some sympathy for those animals, as to limit practices which cause excruciating suffering, but those may only be limited if they are brought to public light, and if legislators receive enough pressure from the public to change. However, it is the purpose of this essay to convince the reader otherwise. The question at hand is: do animals deserve rights? It must certainly be true. Humans deserve rights and this claim is made on numerous appeals. Of one of the†¦show more content†¦Since this is true, we must grant our fellow creatures the same sympathy, as they are capable of the same suffering as humans. There is no gulf that can be conjured from the minds of philosophers that will erase that one fact: animals can suffer like humans. It is for this reason they deserve rights and sympathy. There may be those who oppose the rights of animals based on a sort of reasoning. They may be quick to point to plants and inquire if they deserve rights, too. However, plants are not conscious beings, and they are not capable of suffering. There can be no real sympathy with them. Another may point to how animals eat each other and ask why we should give them rights when they do not give each other rights. Of course, if animals are irrational and lack compassion, are we to be irrational and lack compassion? If another animal, even a human commits an act of rape or murder, does that justify us doing it, simply because he does it? Certainly not. Imitation is no grounds for morality. Some may claim that humans have teeth designed to consume flesh, but this proves nothing. As guns are designed to kill, but that does not justify their usage. Others may claim that god had created animals specifically for our usage. But this was the defense used by slaveowners of their slaves, and it is no less hypocritical or unjust when people today make the same claim of animals. Argumentative Essay On Inherit The Wind - 814 Words

I believe that the state should not tell people what to believe. Everyone has their own mind and they have the right to believe what they want to believe. I see nothing wrong with teachers teaching about Darwinism or Creationism. I think that everyone should be educated on both matters. There is nothing wrong with knowing information about both subjects, and believing or not believing in them. It is the job of teachers to educate the students on people’s ideas and findings from their research. Once a teacher is telling students what they should or shouldnt do then it is a problem. In the movie, Inherit the Wind, there are many instances where I believe that Bert Cates should not have been found guilty for educating his students on the†¦show more content†¦This is incorrect because the theory of evolution is that men evolved from monkey. This means that men took the basics from the monkey, but altogether became more advanced than the animal. So no, if we did evolve fro m the monkey that does not mean that we need to act exactly like them. I believe that God put man onto this earth, but that does not mean that I act exactly like God. I am a person who has sinned, but God has never sinned therefore I do not act completely like him. Someone in the movie also stated, â€Å"man did not evolve from ape, but ape devolved from man.† I don’t know what theory this comes from, or if it even comes from a theory, but I do not agree with it. Does it mean that man came before the monkey and the monkey became less advance than the man? I don’t know how that works. Lastly, on to my favorite line from the movie, â€Å"the bible is a book, it is a good book, but it is not the only book.† I love this line because it is relatable to me. We can also use expressions like yet, still, nevertheless (likevel) to vary our language: It was pouring down, still/nevertheless we managed to finish our work. or: Would you like to do it now or would you rather wait? The following expressions are often used: ither – or (enten – eller / anten – eller), whether – or (enten – eller / anten – eller), neither – nor (verken – eller): He must either walk or use his bike. Whether you walk or use your bike is the same to me. so: It was a long way to go, so we had to start off quite early. Therefore and consequently are words that could be used as alternatives. There are conjunctions which introduce subordinate clauses (leddsetninger/leddsetningar). Here are some of the most common ones: Time clauses: when, while (mens), after, before, until/till, since, as soon as, as long as: While e were having breakfast, the sun broke through. Concessive clauses (innr?mmelse/ vedg?ing): though/although/even though/even if (selv om / sJ?lv 0m), whatever (hva – enn / kva – enn), no matter who/what/when/how (uansett hvem, hva, n?r, hvordan / uansett kven, kva, n?r, korleis): We tried once more, even though we knew it wouldn’t work. Whatever you do, please dont leave me here! Comparative clauses (sammenlignende/samanliknande): than (enn), as – as: He did much better than me, even though I did as well as I could. Conditional clauses (betingelse/vilk?r): if, unless (med mindre), provided (that) (forutsatt at / f?resett at), as long as: I’ll go if you go! This won’t work unless you get more help. Causal clauses (?rsak): because, since, as: He wouldn’t listen to me, because he was so angry. Since/As he was so angry, he wouldn’t listen to me. Using Relative Pronouns Relative pronouns (who, which, that) are used to combine sentences: I have two good friends. They will come to me tomorrow. – I have two good friends, who will come to me tomorrow. Jogging is a nice sport. Everybody can do this sport. – Jogging is a nice sport, which everybody can do. Combining sentences with relative pronouns is more common in written English than in spoken English. Using Ing-torms The ing-form of the verb can be used to make the language more varied and often better. Look at the two sentences She was walking through the main street and She met two good friends. They can be combined by using a conjunction: While she was walking through the main street, she met two good friends. But you can also use an ng-form and shorten the sentence: Walking through the main street, she met two good friends. NB! When you use an ing-form like this, the subject of the two parts must be the same. Another example: Standing in front of me, she could see the stage much better. An ing-form can be used to replace a defining (n?dvendig) relative clause: Did you talk to the person who passed you? – Did you talk to the person passing you? Using Infinitive Constructions Infinitive constructions can be used to make sentences â€Å"flow† better. Look at the ollowing examples where that, when, where, how, what sentences are replaced by infinitive constructions: I was glad that I could leave – I was glad to leave. She was sorry when she heard about the accident – She was sorry to hear about the accident. We found out where we could leave our luggage – We found out where to leave our luggage. He knew how he would get to the place – He knew how to get to the place. Do you understand what you have to do? Do you understand what to do? NB! The subject in the main clause and the subordinate clause must be the same. Look at the following sentence: My father told me what I should do. In sentences where the indirect object (me) is the same as the subject of the subordinate clause (l), we can use an infinitive construction to improve our language: My father told me what to do. Using Special Express ions There are lots of words and expressions which can be used to bind sentences together and which can help us continue a special line of thought. Here are some which you may find useful: to begin with/flrst of all – for det f?rste in the first place secondly, thirdly for det andre, for det tredJe finally – til slutt to sum up – for ? runde av besides – dessuten/dessutan turtnermore – videre/vidare in addition – i tillegg on the contrary – tvert i mot on the one hand – p? den ene siden / p? den eine sida on the other hand – p? den andre siden / p? den andre sida because of this – p? grunn av dette consequently – derfor for this reason – av denne grunn above all – framfor alt first and foremost – f?rst og fremst in spite of, despite – til tross for / trass i yet, still, nevertheless – likevel How to cite Linking words, Papers

Marriage and Wife free essay sample

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary marriage is defined as â€Å"the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law. † In the essay â€Å"Of Marriage and Single Life† by Francis Bacon, he talks about how men should act to please women, so they can marry them in the future. Francis Bacon wrote this piece in the early seventeenth century. In the essay â€Å"I Want A Wife† by Judy Syfers, she talks about wives from a husbands’ perspective. Syfers basically describes all the characteristics and personality traits that she thinks men look for in a woman. These two essays have some similarities on how Bacon and Syfers think that marriages should work, however the pieces also have a lot of differences. As stated earlier the piece by Francis Bacon was written long before Syfers was even born, therefore some of the ideas that Bacon believes are much different because of the time period the essay was written in. We will write a custom essay sample on Marriage and Wife or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Francis Bacon talks about the differences between married men and single men. He said that single men make better friends and are generally more fun to be around. However single men are not as loyal and reliable as married men because they have never had to make a commitment like marriage. He also believes that all the money that a man makes should go straight to providing for his wife and children, so they can live in the best environment and household possible. Bacon believes that single men are more charitable, because they do not have a wife and family that they have to provide for. Bacon also makes it clear that if a woman is unhappy with her marriage that it is ultimately her fault because she chose to marry her husband with mutual consent. Judy Syfers’ essay is written from the perspective that she is a man describing what she believes is the perfect wife. However in the first line of her essay Syfers says that she is married and has children. In this essay Syfers is almost mocking men saying that men do nothing to help out in marriages. She said, â€Å"I want a wife who will not bother me with rambling complaints about a wife’s duties. But I want a wife who will listen to me when I feel the need to explain a rather difficult point I have come across in my course of studies. And I want a wife who will type my papers form me when I have written them. † The beginning of this quote says that a wife hould not complain about how much work they have, because the husband’s duties are much more difficult than what the wife did all day. Also it says that women should listen to men about the problems that they are having, but it does not say anything about the women responding and helping them through their problems. It also says that a wife should type the husband’s papers for him after he has written them; however t hat is just trying to say that men are too lazy to do task that they are more than capable of doing themselves. This article is very biased to women because it was written by a woman. Judy Syfers is basically saying that men do little to nothing in marriages, and the women do everything to take care of their husbands. It is easy to tell that this essay is much more modern than the other essay because toward the end of it Syfers says, â€Å"If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one. † The ideas of divorces are very recent, and have only been around since the mid nineteen hundreds. Basically one of these essays is written from the women’s perspective and the other is written from a man’s perspective. However the one from the women’s perspective was written as if she was a man in search of the perfect wife. Also the essay written by Judy Syfers is about four hundred years more recent than Francis Bacon’s essay. It is easy to spot the time difference as well because Syfers talks about getting divorced and typing papers, while the essay written by Francis Bacon talks about how a man should treat his wife. However most of the ideas inside the marriage are very similar, such as how the couples should behave and interact, and their beliefs on children are similar as well. That is how these essays about marriage are similar and different.
